Transportation Home
The 2006 Transportation Master Plan provides a road map to accommodate travel demand over the next 15 to 20 years. As population and employment continues to grow, additional pressures will be placed on the Town's road system by cars, trucks, pedestrians and cyclists. But, roads have limited right-of-ways and as such cannot be widened indefinitely. The Master Plan recommends some road improvements but those road improvements will focus on moving people as opposed to moving the single occupant vehicle such as the Yonge Street and Hwy. 7 YRT rapid transit system. Widening of other roads from four to six lanes will include high occupancy (HOV) lanes for buses and for 2+ occupants. More road connections are recommended across Hwy 404 to service the employment lands. The transportation improvements are prioritized in five year increments from 2007 to 2021 and beyond. The recommendations of the 2006 Transportation Master Plan were endorsed by Council in October 2006.
The Town is currently in the process of undertaking a technical update to the 2006 Transportation Master Plan to support growth in Richmond Hill to 2031, as well as accommodating provincial and regional planning goals. The update is part of the overall Official Plan review process and will provide the basis for revisions and input to the transportation component of the Town's new Official Plan.
