The Legal Services Division provides a range of legal services to Town Council, Town Committees, Town Departments, Associated Boards and the Committee of Adjustment.
These services include: legal opinions and advice; representation at the Ontario Municipal Board (O.M.B.) and in the Courts; and the processing of agreements (e.g., subdivision agreements) and other real estate transactions such as acquisition and sale of real property.
The Division mandate includes:
- standardizing and simplifying Town agreements and the procedures for processing these agreements
- holding regular Preventative Law Workshops for civic staff to assist them in understanding the legal implications of their work
- providing legal representation to the Town in matters before the O.M.B. and the Courts
- assisting Senior Town Management, Council and Committees in their decision- making functions
The Legal Division does not provide legal services to the public regarding personal legal matters.
Property Acquisitions and Disposals Branch The Property Acquisitions and Disposals branch coordinates the maintenance of an inventory of Town-owned and leased properties. This section also coordinates the acquisition and disposal of property on behalf of the Town and ensures that the administrative and legislative requirements have been met.
