The Town of Richmond Hill awarded the first-ever "Key to the City" to Olympic Medalist and World Champion figure skater Elvis Stojko. In a special presentation on September 23, 2002 at the Town Council meeting, Mayor William F. Bell presented Elvis Stojko with this prestigious award on behalf of Richmond Hill Council, staff and citizens. It marks the first time in recent history that the Town has bestowed such an honour on a resident.

Mayor Bell thanked Elvis by saying, "Elvis Stojko has been a marvellous ambassador for the Town as he has risen to the top of the figure skating world. Even after winning two Olympic Silver Medals, three World Championships and seven Canadian Championships, Elvis has never forgotten his roots, and his demeanour has never changed. I cannot tell you how proud we all are of his accomplishments and for all the good he has brought to our Town. We have never given out the Key to the City before, yet I cannot think of a better person for this honour than Elvis Stojko."

As a proud resident, Elvis Stojko put Richmond Hill on the map internationally with his premiere athleticism and dynamic personality. Elvis has also helped the Town provide financial support to local skaters; most notably, through his annual performances in the Mayor's Gala Celebration of Figure Skating since 1997. Richmond Hill previously recognized Elvis' achievements by naming an arena in his honour in 1994.
